FLORAL

Thom came to his profession in an unconventional way when flowers literally replaced paint and other raw materials in his mixed media artworks. From the onset, he was influenced by the French reverence for everything artisanal and intrigued by the symbolic meaning and language of botanicals, a philosophy established in the early 17th century. “People of every nationality recognize the commemorative potential of flowers and acknowledge their relevance at momentous points along life’s journey, from birth to death and everything in between,” he says, “so I’m respectful of their transformative powers.”
Thom will never forget the poignancy of the day after 9/11/2001 when thousands of white roses left over from a cancelled Victoria’s Secret shoot filled his Manhattan studio. Almost silently he and his team arranged the mounds of fragrant blooms into centerpieces and distributed them to every shelter in the city. “The impact those flowers had on all the devastated people we met was amazing,” says Thom. “The simplicity and purity of those simple offerings struck a chord. They exemplified hope; they symbolized beauty, optimism and endurance at a moment when the world felt completely bereft.” Thom brings this level of sensitivity to every vase of flowers he creates.
